Nordic Port Services Ltd serves customers in the Port of Helsinki. The CEO of the company is Thomas Erlund, who is familiar to many of those working in the maritime field in Finland.
Beyond his work at sea, Master Mariner Thomas ‘Tumppi’ Erlund has worked as, for example, a VTS operator, Head of the Vessel Traffic Service unit of the Finnish Transport Agency and Senior Vice President for Meritaito. Now Thomas Erlund is running and managing his own company.
‘I have always had an interest in entrepreneurship, since there have been many entrepreneurs in my family. Prior to becoming a full-time entrepreneur, I have also been a co-owner in a couple of other companies. The idea of serving as a port service provider has been my dream for many years, but I had to wait a long time for the right moment in terms of the situation in Finland.’
‘During my career as a seaman, I noted the lack of services available in many ports. The world is full of ports and companies that provide a lot of different port services, but many times, it seemed that the service itself was not available. The shipbroker might even be physically in another location, thereby making it imperative to have local help available in the port. This is precisely the help we are looking to provide.’
In addition to mooring and detachment services, Nordic Port Services also provides guard and security services by virtue of the security sector business licence issued by the National Police Board of Finland. Nordic Port Services operates in Helsinki, but change of crew transports are provided throughout the entire area of Southern Finland. The tasks are carried out by six permanent employees and six stand-ins. The company has permits to carry out activities in the ports of Rauma, Naantali and Turku, where the service will be initiated in the near future. The plan is also to expand to other ports that fall within the sphere of the EU Port Services Regulation.
